John was born October 10, 1921 to parents James and Elizabeth (Parker) Reid on 14-10-27 W3rd, down south near Central Butte. He had 7 siblings; 3 sisters and 4 brothers. His father passed away when John was 3 ½ years old. The family moved to Moose Jaw. In 1930, his bothers heard of land up north available so the family decided to move to northern Saskatchewan. John attended Elkhart School for a short time, and then went to work.
In the spring of 1941, John joined the Canadian Army; his regiment – 14th Armored Corp., Calgary Tanks. He went to Britain and took part in the Dieppe Raid, in France, August 19, 1942. He went through the Sicilian and Italian campaigns. While serving in Italy, October 1943, on combat duty, he suffered wounds to his right hand. Also, he contracted malaria 4 times and spent some time in hospitals. He was honourably discharged as medically unfit for service in November 1944. John experienced trauma from his service during wartime, but kept it “under wraps” and only in later years did he share some of his experiences.
On November 3, 1947 John married Audrey Hay. They had a family of 4 boys: John Terrence, Robert (Bob), Rodger and Hal. John worked hard to support his family. He did lumber/bush work and had a mixed farming operation. He had a great passion for farming and enjoyed sitting at the table with a cup of coffee discussing the latest farm news. He farmed for many years; well into his 90’s.
John is survived by his wife Audrey, of nearly 75 years. His 4 sons, 9 grandchildren: Janice, William, Ryan, Norma, Ken, Jen, Deanna, Amanda, and Erica, great grandchildren: Justine, Skyla & Jon Chisolm; Diamond Reid; Kiley, Shelby & Jesse Reid; Piper & Darcy Tourigny, Kiefer Ewasiuk & baby John Robert (J.R) Lockwood, daughters in law Julie and Lori Reid and also many nieces & nephews and great nieces & nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents James and Elizabeth, siblings: Alec, Donald, Tom, Andrew, Margaret, Kathy and Anna.
John passed from this life on April 25, 2021 of natural causes in the arms of his loving wife Audrey. John will be dearly missed
