Mike passed away peacefully in his sleep at Pineview Lodge on
August 1, 2019.
He was born on October 21, 1926 to Andrew and Mary Dmyterko at Blaine Lake, SK. His brother John was born 1928. In March 1930 the family moved to the Sunnybrook area (RM of Nipawin), where Mike grew up. He helped build the family home and helped with farming. Mike attended school at Sunnybrook and later Nipawin High School where he completed grade 10. In 1936 sister Annie was born followed by Nick in 1937. Mike met Doreen Melnychuk at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in 1943. When Mike went to work at the grain terminal at Port Arthur, ON (now Thunder Bay), he and Doreen began to write letters to each other. On June 6, 1946 they were married at Sts. Peter and Paul Church where they first met. They farmed in the Sunnybrook area building a happy new life together. In May 1947 their family grew with the addition of their son, Rick, and in May 1949, their daughter, Dianne. In 1954 Mike and Doreen decided to move their family to Grand Centre AB to pursue better employment opportunities. Mike gained employment during the construction of the Cold Lake Air Force Base and in 1956, he was hired as a supply clerk. In 1957, the family moved to Bonnyville and Mike commuted to the base until 1964. In June 1964, after moving to Edmonton, he worked as a supply manager for Alberta Government Telephones until 1972. At that time, Mike and Doreen decided to resume farming on the original Dmyterko homestead in the Sunnybrook area. They purchased their first motorhome in 1978 and enjoyed yearly trips down south to warmer winter weather. They continued this until 1996. They moved into the town of Nipawin in 2000.
Mike’s faith was strong. He was an active member and held various positions with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada.
