Walter Garfield Harstad passed away peacefully Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Pineview Lodge in Nipawin, Saskatchewan at the age of 91 years. He was born in Nipawin on April 5, 1927, the son of Mable and Fred Harstad.
Wally farmed the family homestead near Codette, Saskatchewan. In 1951 he began farming as a pedigreed seed producer, for which he received many awards. His most recent farming years were as a successful organic farmer. The organic style of farming was well suited to his interest in environmental conservation.
Wally’s greatest passion was his family. He was a devoted husband and proud father who enjoyed horseback riding, skating, skiing, music and dancing with Shirley and his girls. Wally had an exceptional compassion for birds and animals. He and Shirley enjoyed sharing their experiences with others through photographs, magazine articles and professional videos made at their beloved farm, Chokecherry Hollow. Wally also mastered many hobbies including photography, marksmanship, archery, woodworking, leatherwork and flying his airplane.
Wally was predeceased by his parents, Mable and Fred Harstad, his favourite Uncle Leonard Holter and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Left to mourn with precious memories are his wife of 65 years, Shirley (Miller), and his daughters, Debra (Ken) Simpkins and Patricia (Kelly) Byers. He will be fondly remembered by his 6 grandchildren, Melanie (Brett) Litvenenko, Brooke (Kurtis) Rideout, Fielding (Lacey) Simpkins, Hartley (Jodi Nieuwenburg) Simpkins, Cole Byers, Dane (Ashley) Byers and 11 great-grandchildren Karsen, Jordyn, Marren, Madison, Lincoln, Charleigh, Leighton, Locklyn, Boston, Beckham and Beau. He is also survived by his sister Myrtle (Ray, dec’d.) Yelland and family.
Wally’s family want to acknowledge the amazing staff at Pineview Lodge. We appreciate the care, respect, and dignity they provided to ensure his quality of life after his stroke in 2010.
