Garth Franklin Cummings was born on August 22, 1945 in Arborfield, SK. He lived in Arborfield all of his life and never had a desire to live anywhere else. As the youngest of five children, he was the baby and was spoiled by his parents and all of his siblings. He accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Saviour as a boy while a preacher was visiting the Gospel Hall. He loved the Lord all the days of his life and instilled in his children their need of salvation.
Garth began working with his dad in Cummings’ Red & White as a teenager, delivering groceries on his bike. He earned his pilot’s license when he was 17 and loved to fly to check out the fields and go to Namew Lake. He built the addition to the store in 1967 when he took over Cummings’ Red & White. Shortly after, he became a shepherd and started his sheep farm.
On September 2, 1968 he married Lorraine Miller, the love of his life. Together they ran Cummings’ Red & White and were able to travel to many countries through the 27 trips they took through the store. Garth loved to travel and he made friends wherever they went. He loved sports and kept active with golf, hockey, curling, fastball, baseball, volleyball, and anything else that came up. Garth was an amazing dad to Camille and Curt. When his children were in school, he coached hockey and cheered during volleyball games despite being busy with the store.
The family enjoyed camping, hockey games, hockey schools, and traveling together. In 1988 Garth was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. He faced this with determination and carried on with his life to the best of his ability. While the disease slowly progressed and he lost more and more mobility, he always maintained his positive attitude and never complained, unless maybe the Leafs or Roughriders were losing. He loved his grandkids and was always happy to cheer them on and encourage them.
Garth went home to be with the Lord on May 13, 2020.He is survived by loving wife, Lorraine; children Camille (Derek Christensen) and Curt (Pam); grandchildren Cayden and Callie Cummings, and Janae and Declan Christensen; his sisters- and brothers-in-law Peggy,
Harold (Thesen), Lloyd (Taylor), Brian and Shirley (Miller), and Daryl and Fay (Filpula).
Garth was predeceased by his parents Henry & Isabell; siblings Vernon (and wife Muriel), Elmer, Marjorie (Thesen), and Jean (Taylor); and parents-in-law Wallace & Vera Miller.
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ,
after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you
and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
