Melvin Hiram Price was born in Red Lake, Ontario on June 17, 1952. The family moved to Northern Saskatchewan in 1958, eventually settling in the Carrot River area. As a young man Melvin attended Torch Trail Bible Camp. This is where his relationship with God began and would continue to be an important part of the rest of his life. In 1973 he met Alvina Wiebe, the love of his life. Melvin and Alvina were married on June 29, 1974. Their first home was in Medicine Hat, Alberta. A great love for children led them to become foster parents. They adopted their first foster child, Brian. In 1977 they moved back to Carrot River where Melvin started working at the Sawmill. In June of 1979 the family expanded quickly with the addition of Jackie and Dustyn within a couple of days of each other. Melvin was always a big believer in family which is something that he instilled in his children. This is the reason that for them the best memories of childhood are the numerous camping trips that were taken to various locations and lakes in the area. One of Melvin’s great joys in life was hunting and he spent countless hours driving around scouting the fields for that big buck. He was an avid collector of model die cast cars, antiques, and various other things. His children remember him as someone who was not easily overwhelmed by difficult tasks. He could fix just about anything. The highlight of Melvin’s life was when he became a Grandpa in 2011. After retiring from the mill he moved on to driving school bus. He enjoyed the challenges of this job. Things changed when he was diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2016. The illness had a profound effect on Melvin and his whole family. Despite his illness, Melvin’s life was a testament of his faith. Even in his final days, he never uttered complaints. His comment to family was, “I can’t not win!!!” On January 14, 2019 Melvin was called to his heavenly home while surrounded by family who loved him.
He will be dearly missed by his wife Alvina, his children: Brian (Stella) and granddaughter Angel; Jackie, Dustyn; siblings: Shirley (Jerry), Carl (Melanie), Faye (Rodney), Floyd (Sandy), Bev (Herman), as well as many friends he made throughout his lifetime.
